From death to re-birth

Friday July 19- written by Drew Himmelrich and Heather Greenebaum

Yesterday we had an emotional experience as we toured Yad Vashem and Har Herzel, the holocaust memorial museum and the military cemetery. We were each very moved with what we saw.  Our tour guide, Tamar, took us on a great tour around the museum and cemetery and she explained stories in a new perspective leaving us very emotional.
At the cemetery, we saw Golda Meir, Herzel, Yitzhak Rabin, and Michael Levin's graves. Many of the graves were decorated with mementos and flowers.

After an emotional morning, the mood of the day changed as we experienced the rush of Shabbat, at Jerusalem's largest market, eating shawarma and fresh out of the oven rugala.  We then went back to the hotel to get ready for Shabbat.

After running around getting ready for Shabbat, the evening got a new burst of energy as we welcomed the Shabbat with hundreds of others at the Kotel for a truly spectacular evening of singing, dancing, and rejoicing for Shabbat.
For those who hadn't been to the Kotel before and those who had been we all had a wonderful experience. After a long, emotional day we walked back to the hostel to have a much needed sleep.

Note from Megan:
I just wanted to share how amazing all of your teens are!! We are having a really great time, learning a lot and creating wonderful new memories. One of these new memories is meeting Aly Raisman, who is in Israel for the Maccabiah  games, at the Kotel!!! (She is the 2012 American gold medal gymnast.. Who is also Jewish! She was recently on Dancing with the Stars along with Jacoby Jones(Baltimore Ravens player) I asked her how it was hanging out with Jacoby, especially since we are all from Baltimore!) She was so nice and allowed us to take pictures with her....
