My Shabbat Experience

Our group separated early on Friday as we prepared for Shabbat. Before bringing in Shabbat with the Israelis, some of us met at the beach to have our first Ashkelon beach experience. Since the "Zeus laser" committee has been doing push ups and carrying luggage throughout the trip in preparation for the beach, all of our hard work finally paid off when we took the field (beach). It was a great time and an awesome way to transition into Shabbat. Although the group was separate,  the Israelis made us all feel welcome and at home. Or's mother cooked 4 main courses, not to mention the countless side dishes, for an excellent, relaxing meal with the family. Or's family treated me like one of their own and seemed so happy to have me in their home. Saturday was a free day to enjoy Shabbat in any way we choose. We enjoyed a much needed late wake up, or an entire day of sleep for some. The group then met at the beach, where we hung out together until we separated for dinner. Next to Shabbat dinner, havdallah was a highlight of my Saturday. We sang together, reflected on our week, and had an activity with two Capoeira  men. The night was filled with cartwheels, flips, and spinning handstands.

I can't forget the amazing Israeli dessert, ziva, which we all devoured. Overall, we all enjoyed our Shabbat in Ashkelon and will be sad to depart on Tuesday. Our time here has been unforgettable and we have all become truly connected with the city and our Israeli counterparts.
